It is the first full release of the Japanese soundtrack seventeen years later since the official release of the game. It was released during the twentieth anniversary year of Sonic the Hedgehog on 23 November 2011.
While the Japanese soundtrack might sound better at times, I think the upbeat and happy music does not reflect the theme of Sonic CD. A lot of people like to talk bad about the US soundtrack but I think it is more fitting than the Japanese version.
